  • Becky Bailey, There’s Gotta Be A Better Way, Loving Guidance Inc, 1997. Very readable resource for teachers and parents which presents a developmental view and practical tips. Early childhood.

  • Also Conscious Discipline, Loving Guidance Inc, 2000. Lots and lots of "scripts" for teachers and parents, which extend on what we do in our workshops. Good for pre-k thru 5th grade. (hard to find right now. Try redleaf press or loving guidance)

  • Deborah Hewitt, So This Is Normal Too? , Redleaf Press, 1995. Quick lookup for specific issues. Nice quick resource for teachers new to this approach. Preschool/K. Includes pages on each issue written especially for parents.
  • Joyce E. Divinyi, Good Kids, Difficult Behavior(previously titled Successful Strategies for Working or Living with Difficult Kids), The Wellness Connection, 1997. Excellent and readable resource for counselors or teachers. Spans kids from preschool thru adolescence. One of the best new resources I have found. Tear out the section about rewards…we no longer use them.
  • L. Tobin, What Do You Do With a Child Like This?, Whole Person Associates, 1991. A look at what goes on inside the troubled kid from Kindergarten thru adolescence. Includes thoughts, anecdotes and general strategies. Insightful to help educators understand what it happening from the child’s perspective.
  • Sue Bradenkamp and Carol Copple, ed, Developmentally Appropriate Practice, NAEYC 1997. The "bible" of research based early childhood development and practice.
  • Rima Shore, Rethinking the Brain, Families and Work Institute, 1997. Overview of recent findings and how these insights can guide our interactions with kids. Great overall resource on brain research.
  • Alfie Kohn, Punished By Rewards, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1993. One of his classics, giving the basic arguments for internal rather than extrinsic motivation of kids.
  • Stephen Covey, Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People, Simon and Schuster, 1989. Wonderful philosophy of principles to apply to our interactions with peers, children and ourselves. Lots of great ideas for dealing with difficult folks and situations. See also The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families all ages.
  • Laura Davis and Janis Keyser, Becoming the Parent You Want to Be, Broadway Books, 1997. A sourcebook of strategies for the first five years. Great stuff for toddlers through preschool, for home and school. Good parent resource as well.
  • Mary Steiner Whelan, But They Spit, Scratch, and Swear!, A-ha Communications, 2000. The do’s and don’ts of behavior guidance with school are children. New book, very up to date with most recent practices and approaches.
  • Jane Nelson, Lynn Lott and H. Stephen Glenn, Positive Discipline in the Classroom, Prima Publishing, 2000. If you get it, make sure you get the 3rd edition, which has been revised and updated based on the most current research in the field. Concentrates on using class meetings to help kids learn self-discipline and good choices. Valuable for pre-k thru highschool. Wonderful guidance to help teachers develop "solution based" rather than "punitive based" resolutions to behavior problems. Also Positive Discipline for Preschoolers, Prima Publishing,1998. Good for developmental preschools, Head Start and Pre-Kindergarten programs.
  • Madelyn Swift, Discipline for Life : Getting it Right With Children, Childright, 1999. Little ones thru about 5th grade. Good pieces on natural and logical consequences.
  • John F.Taylor, Helping Your Hyperactive/Add Child Prima Publishing,1997. Great resource for parents and school professionals. A couple of meaty chapters on best classroom practices to accommodate the special needs of children with ADD and ADHD.
  • Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein, Raising Resilient Children, Contemporary Books, 2001. Nice book for educators and families on helping children to develop resiliencies. Pre-k through high school.
  • The Devereux Foundation, Classroom Strategies to Promote Children’s Social and Emotional Development, Kaplan Press, 1999. The best resource for developmentally appropriate guidance for preschool children. Excellent information on how to guide children while supporting resiliencies at the same time. A must for any preschool program.
  • William Pollack, PhD, Real Boys, Henry Holt and Company, 1999. Looking at life through the eyes of boys. Pre-k through high school.
